When 30 was approaching, I asked a lot of people who’ve already recently reached the age.. what’s different.
And the answer was always “nothing” and “it’s a bigger deal for everyone else than it is for me”
So .. now that I’ve spent a month being 30 (it’s kinda like being an investigative reporter .. “I’ve posed as a 30 year old for a month now, my detailed findings are listed below”)
I still ninja – and am still the oldest one in the class .. including the sensei
I haven’t quit my job in a mid-life crisis style moment
I haven’t started eating vegetables
I still enjoy the odd banana milkshake
I don’t feel any older, and certainly no more mature.
So in general, things seem to have stayed the same, but what is different?
Since I turned 30, I’ve started DMing d&d games.. I’ve never done that before. and quite frankly it’s terrifying!
Since I turned 30, I’ve started frequenting lap dancing clubs .. well I went once.. Lara took me for my 30th.. it’s kinda a tradition, something you have to do on your 30th birthday.
Since I turned 30, I’ve started frequenting Donkey Derbys.. well I went once.. Pixie and Mojo took me for my 30th
Since I turned 30, I’ve spent far more time phoning tech support than I did in my 20’s … hopefully that’s just a bad experience for today, and not a sign that I’m soon to be old enough that I won’t understand new fangled technology .. like video recorders
I filled in an online form the other day and lied about my age, said I was 23 … I don’t know why I did it, it was on impulse.. and I felt so bad about it I went back and corrected it
Since I turned 30, I’ve bought more tickets to go see Dave Gorman live on stage than I did in my 20’s
In conclusion, when somebody tells you “ack nothing changes” .. they’re lying to you, and more importantly to themselves .. I suspect they’re probably crying inside
