Mozilla and Opera annoy me..

I’ve been working on web pages lately, my own, and the work one, using transparent css divisions to allow background pictures .. in IE they display perfectly, in Mozilla and Opera they .. don’t

WHY did anyone bother creating an inferior browser to IE.. ?

I understand there is market for alternative browsers, in particular for the “I hate Microsoft cos they’re .. erm .. well … they’re too succesful .. “ brigade.

IE has so many people using it that the only way the others can possibly gain users is to be better .. but neither are as good as IE.

They do have nice features, like opening windows in tabs and stuff, but, (for example) … what was the Opera designer thinking..

“Ooh I could do a browser that’s like IE but with tabs … ooh but maybe I should remove support for some of the standard css and html tags .. make it not quite compatible with the vast majority of sites out there .. that’s a winning idea!”

The ENTIRE function of a browser is to display web pages, everything else is a gimmick, so whatever nice gimicks you have, not displaying web pages properly is unforgivable.

Unforgivable.

    Before anyone comments that the current transparent background isn’t displaying perfectly in IE, it’s a work in progress cos of problems with pmachine and transparency, but check out http://www.tradingstandards.gov.uk/warrington/motor.htm to see what I mean

    No browser is 100% compliant with the standards set by the w3 organisation. However the one which is LEAST compliant is IE. To view a website properly, you will have more luck with Opera and mozilla than you would with the bloated, unsecure, stagnant, slow browser that is IE.

    All of the browsers you mentioned are compatible with the vast vast vast majority of sites out there so there isn’t an issue, it’s only when you use browser specific hacks that you might run into problems but only a fool would do that.

    In an ideal world all browsers would be 100% compliant, updated regularly when a new set of standards is available (not left to rot until your next OS is due out). People would then be able to choose a browser based on the UI and features not the rendering engine it uses.
