This morning for various reasons I upset a woman who’s house I was searching.

For ‘various reasons’, you can substitute ‘because I was searching her house’.

She insulted me, but in such a manner that it took a few moments to realise I’d been insulted, and was therefore too late to react.

She said “You know .. you look like Brian McFadden” (Westlife) “Has anybody ever told you that?”

She then paused for a moment

“I know him you know, he’s an idiot”.

…

It took me a few moments to realise she’d just told me that I look like an idiot.

Needless to say I way muchly impressed with the subtle insult technique, and will overuse it mercilessly.
